Excerpt, "Inner Workings":
It’s not that I’ve made no progress as those who tell me so–
I’m experiencing the dormancy before I start to grow.
I’m in a quiet lull before the buds start to flower–
Sending forth the nourishment for my soul’s highest hour.
Although it isn’t obvious to those outside of me–
There are great things happening that they just can’t see.
There is quiet development, aches, pain and heartache too–
Before the beauty of the flowers, growth and wisdom true.

Reviews
"Gifts of the Heart is memoir-like and shows an evolutionary process in soul growth, and the poems show the grace of simplicity and strength of conviction. The poems in the beginning (about will, faith, and test) seem to evoke the language of the Bible. The section on pain and loss reveals the heart of an artist. It's intense and introspective, and the language seems more distinctly individualistic. Then the healing and recovery part begins with the voice and visions of a child, perhaps expressing the purity, innocence, and a vulnerable kind of beauty. Towards the end, I see more images of nature and mother earth, and the kind of speaking voice similar to one in a Native American story-telling. In the beginning of the book, you, the poet, invoke and beckon to the Father image. But towards the end, the poet seems to be returning to the all-embracing mother earth, the nurturing, accepting female image embodied in American Indian spirituality and values. There is a certain sensuality in your verbal style I like very much."
